Tyrone Vs QUB – 2014 Ulster GAA Dr McKenna Cup, Round 2

My first football/photography outing of the year took me to Healy Park, Omagh for the second round Dr Mc Kenna Cup tie between title holders Tyrone and students Queen’s University Belfast.

Conditions were pretty dire for the game with cold temperatures and a lashing rain blowing sideways. QUB played with the wind in the first half and used it well, the students showing a few gaps around the Tyrone defence in the first half. Danny McNulty struck an early Tyrone goal but Shay McArdle hit the back of the Tyrone after an impressive solo run. At half time the sides went in level, 1-06 apiece.

Queen’s hit two early points in the second half but that’s as good as it got for them as they failed to score for the final 30 minutes. During this time, Tyrone went on rampage mode as they used the strength of the breeze to its full advantage. Peter Hughes, Connor McAliskey, PJ Lavery and Ronan O’Neill all soared over points and late into the game, Tyrone senior debutant PJ Lavery finished well to the back of the net and sub Paddy Mc Niece scored a third goal close to full time.

In the end there were 17 points between the 2 sides but Mickey Harte’s team will be hoping to finish top of the group on Wednesday night when they meet Armagh in their final group game.

Full time score; Tyrone 3-19 QUB 1-08.
