Tyrone Vs Monaghan – 2013 Ulster GAA Dr McKenna Cup FInal

Tyrone won the Dr McKenna Cup for the eleventh time on Saturday night following a comprehensive ten point over Monaghan on Saturday night in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh. Just under 5000 people braved the cold and very wet night to see a strong Tyrone side speckled with some new faces take on Malachy O’Rourke’s Farney army.

There were some dirty challenges in the opening half all coming from Monaghan who, at times, seemed to be focused on getting Tyrone drawn into a playground fight on the field rather than concentrating on the football. Consistent late challenges, pulling of jerseys and grabbing of players was the recipe in the opening 25 minutes much to the frustration of the crowd and it largely went unpunished until before half time when Monaghan’s Ronan McNally was caught taking part in one such dangerous tackle on Peter Harte and was rightfully sent off for it. By this stage Tyrone had added points from McAliskey, Stephen O’Neill and Plunkett Kane and goals soon then came from Mark Donnelly and O’Neill to give Tyrone a comfortable 2-07 to 1-04 lead against 14 men Monaghan.

The second half was a lot less competitive and another early goal came again from the boot of Mark Donnelly. McAliskey, Cavanagh and Kevin Gallagher added further points while Peter Harte scored from the penalty spot in the last kick of the game to give Tyrone a healthy and encouraging ten point win.

Full time score; Tyrone 4-11 Monaghan 1-10

The stakes are a little higher next weekend when Tyrone return back to Division 1 of the National League and take on Down in Newry. Obviously there are some massive ties over the next two months for Mickey Harte’s side and this is sure to be an indicator of how this team of players will fair in 2013….. best of luck to them.
