Tyrone Vs Derry

Tyrone walked over a weakened Derry side on Sunday in the second round of the Division 2 NFL to maintain their 100% winning start in 2012.

A very large crowd filled Healy Park to see the repeat of the Dr Mc Kenna Cup final that happened 2 weeks earlier but this game lacked the fizz and physicality of that game mainly due to the large number of absenteeisms from the Derry team including their captain Barry Mc Goldrick and Eoin Bradley. Hence the game resembled a training exercise for the Red Hands as points by Penrose, O’Neill, Murphy and a Mickey Murphy fisted goal in the first half gave them 1-07 to 0-03 lead at half time.

It was more of the same in the second half as Tyrone continued to tally up the points with scores from Matthew Donnelly, Mugsy, Mark Donnelly and substitute Kyle Coney. A surging run through the centre of the Derry by Peter Harte resulted in him being pulled down by Patsy Bradley in the square – he was sent off by Maurice Deegan and Peter Harte blasted the penalty in the bottom right corner.

Full Time score: Tyrone 2-15 Derry 0-09.

Tyrone – J Curran; A McCrory, C Clarke, D Carlin; C McCarron, P Harte, D McCaul; M Murphy, A Cassidy; Mattie Donnelly, Mark Donnelly, R McNabb; O Mulligan, M Penrose, S O’Neill. Subs: Joe McMahon for Cassidy, K Coney for O’Neill, S Cavanagh for Mulligan, Justin McMahon for Murphy, S McNally for McCarron.

The only upset of the day for Tyrone was the sight of Stephen O’Neill limping off the field again… hopefully this isn’t a serious injury and everyone hopes he will be fit again for their next fixture in 3 weeks when Tyrone take on Louth in Drogheda.

Derry's Paddy Bradley and Tyrone's Stephen O'Neill shake hands before the throw in. One of Ireland's most experienced referees Maurice Deegan was in charge today but he had very little to do.
