Tyrone Vs Derry – 2013 Ulster GAA Dr Mc Kenna Cup

Tyrone started 2013 with a narrow 2 point win in the first round tie of the Dr Mc Kenna Cup on Sunday in Healy Park, Omagh. In a repeat of the 2012 Dr Mc Kenna Cup final, a massive crowd of 4000+ saw the neighbouring counties take on each other causing throw in to be delayed nearly 15 minutes.

Both sides have changed quite a bit however in the last 12 months. Derry are now under the new management structure of Brian Mc Iver, Paddy Crozier and Paddy Tally and based on yesterday’s performance, they look to be a county that are on the rise again. Tyrone obviously have had the retirements of Davy Harte, Ricey Mc Menamin and Kevin Hughes in 2012 but along with the new look ‘Hunky Dorys’ jersey, they have added a plethora of new faces onto the Dr Mc Kenna Cup panel including promising prospects Darren Mc Curry, Connor Mc Aliskey and goalkeeper Niall Morgan to name a few.

Conditions were very very wet on the field yesterday, causing players to slip and slide and the quality of football was adversely affected as a result. At HT the scoreboard was evenly balanced 0-07 each following Tyrone points by Stephen O’Neill, Matthew Donnelly and Sean Cavanagh. Derry made the better start in the second half and Tyrone were constantly playing catch-up with them for large periods. It took the inclusion of Peter Harte and Darren Mc Curry to add further attacking force to the Red Hand comeback and this made for an exciting final 15 minutes as the crowd got behind the game. A high shot from Plunkett Kane was kept in play by substitute Clonoe’s Connor Mc Aliskey who turned his man and shot into the bottom corner to give Tyrone a 2 point advantage. Derry had a goal chance of their own in the dying seconds but it was struck narrowly wide.

Full time score; Tyrone 1-14 Derry 0-15.

This was a terrific start for Tyrone in 2013 and a valuable 2 points, Derry will definitely have felt they deserved at least a point for their efforts but it wasn’t to be. Tyrone now face Antrim on Sunday in Belfast in Round 2 of the Dr Mc Kenna Cup and we are sure to see more new faces in a Tyrone jersey then.

Below are a few of my photos from the game…….
