Rock Vs Strabane – 2012 Tyrone GAA Intermediate Championship

Rock made a bold statement to all the other Division 2 teams in Fintona on Sunday evening in the first round of the 2012 Tyrone Intermediate Championship with an impressive win over a strong Strabane side. Conditions were a lot brighter for the 6pm throw in compared to the earlier games in Dungannon.

There was very little between both sides in the first half in a game of free flowing football and plenty of scores from play with Rock’s Diarmuid Carroll, Martin Mc Creesh and Eamon Ward getting on the scoresheet for Rock while Warner Mullen, Paddy Roarty and JP Gallagher scored for Strabane leaving the Sigersons with a one point advantage at the break. Rock 0-05 Strabane 0-06.

During half time however, a Strabane sub was badly hurt in a fall resulting in an ambulance having to be called and all football to stop until he was removed from the field. This took quite some time and the second half resumed again at 8.05pm, over an hour after it should have.

This undoubtedly had an effect on the focus of the players on both sides and as the second half resumed, it was Rock that capitalised on the misfortune of the injury. Tyrone minor Diarmuid Carroll burst through the Strabane defence after the restart and struck the back of the net followed by points from Ryan Crilly and Conor Mc Creesh to give Rock a 5 point lead! Strabane hit back with a couple points of their own but it was too little too late as both Mc Creeshs added more points for Rock to give them a deserved victory. Full time score…… Rock 1-11 Strabane 0-08.

This ball was just a couple of inches too high for Diarmuid Carroll.

Conor Mc Creesh collects a high ball into the full forward line…. it’s difficult to photograph a shot like this as you are trying to estimate where the aerial ball is going to land and then try to get the camera focused in on that point so I was happy with how this one turned out.

Conor Mc Creesh turns Strabane’s Ryan Mc Elroy.

Conor Mc Creesh had a couple of goal opportunities of his own but the ball blasted over the bar on each occasion.

One last attack for Rock’s Aidan Mc Garrity.
