Kildare Vs Tyrone – 2014 Allianz GAA National League, Division 1

Sunday’s NFL Division 1 game between Tyrone and Kildare will be talked about for many years following a Tyrone comeback of Rocky Balboa proportions in Kildare’s homeground of St Conleth’s Park.

On the tenth anniversary of the untimely death of Cormac McAnallen, Tyrone arrived with 3 points from a possible 4 and they were hoping to come away with another two to secure their position in Division 1 for next year. But this script didn’t go to plan as within the first nine minutes of the match, Kildare raced into a 0-07 to no score lead. Tyrone’s full forward line were mere extras in the whole game. Things didn’t get any better when Peter Harte was shown the black card too in the 20th minute. However, upcoming Eglish player Emmett McKenna struck a fine goal to reduce the lead and a series of Kildare mistakes in the closing 10 minutes of the half meant that Ronan O’Neill, Darren McCurry and Niall Morgan all popped the ball over the bar to make it 0-13 to 1-09 at HT.

Tomas O’Connor fisted an early second goal for Kildare to make the gap 4 points again which meant Tyrone were facing another up-hill battle. Sean Cavanagh, Mattie Donnelly and sub Mark Donnelly reduced the deficit down to 1 again with 15 minutes to go. But Kildare never let Tyrone level the scoreboard and with Paddy Brophy and Eoghan O’Flaherty adding further points, the game was virtually over with 5 in it and 5 minutes to go. But a bad sideline Kildare ball allowed Tyrone to break free which ended in Ronan O’Neill scoring a goal and with 1 added minute announced over the loudspeaker, Mattie Donnelly broke forward again and the ball found Mark Donnelly who somehow got the ball into the net. The collective groan from the Kildare crowd was something else…..just like the cheers and laughs from the Tyrone supporters!

And that’s how the game ended….. a fantastic 5 point turnaround in the final 3 minutes of the game. A great away result for Tyrone which was well worth the journey to Kildare.

Full time score; Kildare 1-21 Tyrone 3-16.
