Dublin Vs Tyrone – 2013 GAA Allianz Football League, Division 1

Tyrone overturned the odds on Saturday night and defeated Dublin by one point after last Sunday’s disappointing performance to Cork. Dublin, who were missing influential star man Bernard Brogan, came close to clinching a draw at least throughout the game but strong, solid defending throughout the field from all the Tyrone players meant that they now top Division 1 with Dublin.

A modest crowd of under 20,000 watched the game under the lights at Croke Park but they unfortunately saw Tyrone hit 6 wides in the opening 10 minutes of the game. On the other end of the field, Dublin’s Paddy Andrews and Kevin Mc Manamon were creating havoc in the Tyrone defence with their pacing runs through the centre with one such run resulting in an early Dublin goal. Tyrone soon found their scoring form though and following points from Mark Donnelly, Sean Cavanagh and goalkeeper Niall Morgan they took a 0-10 to 1-06 lead at HT.

Dublin dominated possession in the opening period of the second half but strong tenacious defending from Tyrone meant they often found it difficult to find space to shoot. On the Canal End of the field, Tyrone’s Stephen O’Neill, Colm Cavanagh, Martin Penrose and subs Plunkett Kane and Paddy McNiece scored some magnificent long range strikes to keep Tyrone ahead by the smallest of margins. Further scores from Peter Harte and Plunkett Kane allowed Tyrone to enjoy a 3 point lead for a short time but this was cancelled out by 2 further points from Dublin. In a tense few minutes when Tyrone just wanted to keep hold of the ball, they counted down the clock and held on for a one point win.

Full time score; Dublin 1-14 Tyrone 0-18.

This was a tremendous win for Mickey Harte’s men and will probably see them now make the Division 1 semi finals. Before then though they have to meet Kildare next Sunday in Newbridge.
