Down Vs Tyrone – 2013 GAA Allianz Football League, Division 1

Tyrone got their promotion back to Division 1 football in the Allianz National football league to a terrific start on Saturday night when they recorded a 3 point win over a determined Down side. Conditions were perfect in Pairc Esler, Newry for both football and photos and a very large crowd came out to see how their teams would fare in the opening round of the league.

Down reigned supreme in the first half with the Mourne men winning the majority of the ball in around midfield and allowing danger men such as Benny Coulter, Mark Poland and Donal O’Hare to have too much space for scoring. Tyrone were unlucky not to have scored a goal or two in the opening half but Down will also say the same and it took the boot of goalkeeper Niall Morgan to reduce the half time deficit to 2 points. A massive wake up call from the Dr Mc Kenna Cup champions was needed. HT; Down 0-07 Tyrone 0-05.

Thankfully that came in the opening seconds of the second half when Stephen O’Neill scored a point and there was a greater sense of urgency amongst the team. A fine Martin Penrose and Connor McAliskey pass found Mark Donnelly who slammed the ball into the back of the net but this was nearly immediately cancelled out by a Donal O’Hare fisted goal to keep the scoreline 1-08 apiece. Things then started to heat up on and off the field as each team fought for their first 2 points of the league. Joe McMahon was very unlucky to get a second booking reducing Tyrone to 14 men but excellent work rate from sub Conor Clarke, Stevie O’Neill, Sean Cavanagh, Mark Donnelly, Ryan McKenna and Aidan McCrory more than compensated for his sending off. Cavanagh and O’Neill finished strongly for Tyrone as Down were also reduced to 14 men following a double booking for Conor Laverty.

Full time score; Down 1-08 Tyrone 1-11

It was a fantastic, exciting game of football which had the standard of any Championship game of football. Tyrone put in an excellent second half performance to turn the game around and will be pleased to pick up their first 2 points of the league. Next Sunday they will have to do it all again when they face Mayo in Castlebar.
