Cookstown Fr Rocks Vs Finuge – 2012 All Ireland GAA Intermediate Club Championship Final

Saturday night was another historic night for the Cookstown Fr Rocks club when they were crowned All-Ireland Intermediate football champions of 2012, a repeat of their success in 2009.

From Dunmoyle to Dublin………. Cookstown have come through a lot of challenges during the past 6 months of championship football beginning in Dunmoyle when they edged out Augher in a great game. They passed by Loughmacrory in the next round and then neighbours Rock to set up a Tyrone Championship final against Eskra which they had to play twice after the Fr Rocks pulled off a narrow draw in the original final. Very quickly, Cookstown found themselves in the Ulster Intermediate championship and up against Armagh’s Killeavy who they eased past and then Doohamlet which went down to the wire again. In their Ulster intermediate championship final they were up against Warrenpoint in a game that went to extra time but eventually the Tyrone champions were now Ulster champions. Just 2 weeks ago, they met Charlestown in the All-Ireland semi-final, another game that needed extra time to decide a winner. This long and battled journey eventually led to Croke Park on Saturday night when they were up against Kerry and Munster champions Finuge.

There is a tremendous sense of belief in the Cookstown team and management and this shone through on Saturday night. Leading men Owen Mulligan, Conor Mullan, Jason Quinn and Shea McGarrity all shone in the first half allowing the Fr Rocks to go in with a slender 0-05 to 0-04 lead at HT thanks to an excellent save from goalkeeper Marty Rea too.

Things went even more the Tyrone champions way in the second half when Finuge had two players sent off. The numerical advantage and an excellent performance by sub Raymond Mulgrew (who is only home two weeks following a two year stint in Australia) allowed James McGahan to score the only goal of the game and effectively end the game as a contest.

Full time score; Cookstown Fr Rocks 1-09 Finuge 0-06.

It was a fully deserved win for Cookstown on Saturday night and they have done Tyrone proud.

Below are approx 110 photos I have picked out from the game……. hopefully these photos will not only be a bank of memories for the players, managers and fans of the club over the next few days but over many many years. As the saying goes, ‘Memories may fade but pictures last forever!’ :-)
