Clonoe Vs Omagh – 2012 Tyrone GAA Senior Football Championship

The second top tie in Dunmoyle on Sunday afternoon saw the meeting of senior teams Omagh St Endas and Clonoe O’Rahillys in the Power NI Tyrone SFC.

Clonoe, playing in their ‘away’ black jersey, took a massive 6 point lead in the opening 15 minutes thanks to scores from Stephen Mc Nulty, Shane Coney and Conor Mc Aliskey and a fisted goal from Danny Mc Nulty. ¬†Omagh’s first score in the game came in the 18th minute with a point from Conan Grugan, much to the relief of the large Omagh crowd. Points soon followed from Conor ODonnell, Shane O’Neill and Joe Mc Mahon to name a few and as tempers began to flare towards half time, Omagh had cut the Clonoe lead to 1 point. A half of two halves! HT score; Omagh 0-06 Clonoe 1-04.

The temperature on the field didn’t cool at the beginning of the second half and within minutes a couple of hard clashes between the teams resulted in referee Eamon Mc Hugh sending off Clonoe’s Shane O’Hagan for a second bookable offence. As the 1600 strong crowd got behind their teams, Joe Mc Mahon pointed to level the game. Then Shane O’Neill hit the back of the net for Omagh but seconds later Danny Mc Nulty hit a goal for the Rahillys to keep them one point ahead after a Conor Mc Aliskey point. Clonoe went on to score 2 more points to leave them 4 points ahead but Omagh’s never say die spirit came through and points from Conor O’Donnell and Cathal Mc Carron levelled the game.

Omagh St Endas dominated play in the last few minutes of the match but couldn’t find that elusive score to win the game and a draw is how it ended……. Omagh 1-11 Clonoe 2-08.

It was a pulsating game of championship football for a first round tie and Omagh nearly pulled off a massive victory in the dying stages. They will have to do it all over again next Sunday and let’s hope it will provide the same entertainment and quality in football.
