Aghaloo Vs Clogher – 2015 GAA Tyrone JFC, First Round

Aghaloo O’Neills continued their excellent run of form in 2015 with a comprehensive victory over neighbours Clogher in the first round of the Tyrone Junior Championship.

Played in lovely conditions in Omagh, Aghaloo took the lead in the opening couple of minutes and they never let it slip with some excellent scores from Tiarnan Donnelly, Niall Henderson and Jody McGlone to give them a 0-09 to 0-01 lead at HT. Clogher will be disappointed with how the first 30 minutes went but they made a huge effort in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, scoring a Barry McKenna fisted goal and two followup points to reduce the lead to 4 points but Aghaloo regained control of the game and went onto win by 8 points following further points from Brian McKenna, Niall McElroy and Stephen Donnelly. Well done to them.

Full time score; Aghaloo 0-17 Clogher 1-06.

2013 Ryan Tierney Memorial GAA Tournament

The annual Ryan Tierney football tournament took place again on Sunday afternoon in Clogher GFC. Local clubs from both sides of the border took part in the minor event and in a repeat of last year’s tournament, Ardboe lifted the Ryan Tierney Cup again this time beating Moy in the final. In the Shield final, Dromore managed to overcome a determined Loughmacrory effort.

Below are a few photos from the successful day in memory of Ryan.

Clogher Vs Brocagh – 2012 Tyrone GAA Junior Football Championship

Brocagh Emmetts overcame a valiant effort from Clogher Eire Óg on Friday night in the second Tyrone Junior Football Championship tie in Eglish. Brocagh started off very well with 3 points in the opening minutes from Michael Hughes and Ciaran Campbell but Clogher soon responded with scores from Darragh Kavanagh and Ciaran Shields to leave them 0-06 to 0-03 ahead at half time.

In the second half, Brocagh’s Paul O’Neill managed to get the ball across the Clogher line to and with more points from Michael Hughes they took a 1-06 to 0-08 lead. Darragh Kavanagh and Ciaran Shields hit further scores for the Clogher Valley men and as the sun began to set over Eglish and as it looked to be heading for a replay, Michael Hughes stepped up and kicked the ball over the bar to give Brocagh an injury time victory. Full time score; Clogher 0-12 Brocagh 1-10.

Ryan Tierney GAA Memorial Tournament

On Sunday I attended the Ryan Tierney Memorial Tournament in Ryan’s home parish of Clogher, Co Tyrone. I knew Ryan since I was 4 years old and played football at his house during the school holidays for many years with his twin brothers Mark and Paul so it was a great shock when I heard of Ryan’s passing 10 years ago after a car accident. Ryan was an active member of Clogher Eire Og GFC and his memory now lives on in the annual minor football tournament set up in his name.

Sunday was a great day for football with temperatures soaring and the sun shining.  Teams from both sides of the border took part in the tournament including Gael Naomh Padraig (made up from players from the Augher and Clogher area), Eglish, Ardboe, Dromore, Loughmacrory, Emyvale, Truagh and Scotstown.

It was a great afternoon of football with Ardboe winning the Ryan Tierney Cup and Scotstown winning the Ryan Tierney Shield (both games AET) and it was also great for me to catch up with some of Ryan’s family again.

Below are some photos from the day.
