Antrim Vs Tyrone – 2013 Ulster GAA Dr Mc Kenna Cup

Tyrone’s second game of the 2013 Dr Mc Kenna Cup took place in Casement Park, Belfast on Sunday when they faced Frank Dawson’s Antrim side. Mickey Harte made a number of changes in the side that defeated Derry last Sunday with Ronan McNamee, Dean McNally, Connor McAliskey, Sean Warnock, Plunkett Kane and Tiarnan McCann all making their senior debut starts for the Red Hands.

Tyrone started strongly and were fortunate to score a goal early on from Peter Harte but this was almost immediately cancelled out when a Tyrone foul inside the square awarded Antrim a penalty which Kevin Niblock safely dispatched away. Points from Ronan McNamee and Stephen O’Neill followed and Peter Harte then scored his second goal of the game after McAliskey’s initial shot was saved by Chris Kerr. HT; Antrim 1-04 Tyrone 2-06.

The second half was a stop-start affair with play having to be stopped quite a few times following knocks to Tyrone’s Sean Warnock, Paddy McNiece, Dermot Carlin, Conor Gormley and Stephen O’Neill all of who had to be taken off. The Tyrone attacks kept coming thankfully however and Darren Mc Curry excelled finishing with 5 points from the game as well as further scores from Plunkett Kane, Sean Cavanagh and a 45 from goalkeeper Niall Morgan who also made a couple important saves at the other end of the field too.

Full time score; Antrim 1-10 Tyrone 2-13.

All in all it was a comfortable win for Tyrone and the other results from the weekend means that they have now qualified for the Dr Mc Kenna Cup semi-finals next Saturday night. Tyrone have one more group game before then on Wednesday night when they take on the UUJ students in Healy Park – this will hopefully be a chance to see even more of the new kids on the block!
